Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple: Pooja Timings, History, Festivals

Chottanikkara Devi Temple is a temple dedicated to the famous Hindu mother godess, Bhagavati Lekhsmi. It is belived among the people that she is residing in Chottanikkara along with her husband Mahavishnu. This temple is one of the famous and popular temple among the 33 temples spread over 3 districts of Kerala and is administered by the Cochin Devaswom Board.

Rajarajeswari (Adiparasakthi) who is the Divine Mother is worshipped in the temple in three form Saraswathy in the morning, Lakshmi at noon and Durga in the evening. It is said that there is an idol of Mahavishnu situated on the same pedestal which is why the the Deity is called Ammenarayana, Devinarayana, Lakshminarayana and Bhadrenarayana.

Kizhukkavu Bhagavathy temple

Along with main deity, the temple complex consists of Kizhukkavu Bhagavathy temple, temples for Sastha, Siva, Ganapathi, Nagas and other Upa-Devas.

Important Festivals

Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple will also host some important festivals inside the temple. Some main festivals are MAKOM Thozhal, Kumbam etc.

Makom Thozal

Makom Thozhal is most important festival of Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple which is celebrated in the malayalam month of Kumbham (Feb / March). It is believed that Bhagavathy in her full attire gave darsan to Vilwamangalam Swamiyar on the Makom day and appears on the same day every year for giving darsan to the devotees in her special appearance. The Bhadrakaali at Kizhukkavu is believed to exorcise evil spirit from devotees, after conducting bhajanam.


The annual festival of the temple is celebrated on Kumbham. It is one of the popular festivals in the temple, the festival starts with Kodiyettu (Flag hoisting ceremony) on Rohini day , lasts for 7 days and ends on Uthram star. Also Daily Para ezhunnellippu over neighbouring areas (houses in the Thattakam) and then Aarattu is conducted on these days. The most important and popular event Makom Thozhal also happens during ulsavam. Makom Thozhal (Devi darsan) between 2 pm and 8 pm is considered to be most effectual for Mangalyam (long married life) and for getting best marriage for girls. There is Pooram ezhunnellippu with 7 Elephants in the morning and at night. The ulsavam ends with Uthram Aarattu and Valiya Guruthi (Atham Guruthy).

Navarathri Aghosham

Navarathri Aghosham is a famous ffestival which attarcts lakhs of devotees from Kerala. Vidhyarambham which is a ritual in which young childrens are introduced into the world of knowledge and learnings is conducted on Vijayadasami day of the Navarathri ulsavam.
